Asset management has emerged as a discipline over the past 20 years. Asset management of structures (such as bridges), has experienced limited development over the past 20 years, with most Bridge Management Systems (BMS) and business systems functioning in the same way over that period. Network demands are increasing, and resources remain constrained, so improving the balance between cost, performance and risk of bridges is a priority, particularly because bridges are normally the critical link in road transport networks.
