Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have historically had an ongoing challenge with the use of unbound granular pavement materials produced from glassy basalt quarry sources. In some areas of Queensland, glassy basalt represents a significant proportion of the paving materials supplied by local quarries. There have been ongoing issues with these materials not complying with the specification requirements for plasticity, liquid limit (LL) and/or linear shrinkage (LS) and water absorption.
