P61 – Use of Hamburg Wheel Tracking Device in Performance-based Testing of Asphalt

November 24, 2025

In 2013, as a part of the transition towards more performance-based asphalt specifications, the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) purchased and commissioned a Hamburg Wheel Tracking Device (HWTD). The HWTD is a laboratory testing device which has been used in Europe and the USA for measuring the susceptibility of asphalt mixtures to moisture-induced damage and permanent deformation. A previous NACOE report was published in 2015 documenting the commissioning process for the HWTD and included some early performance testing, as well as the development of a TMR test method.
