This report explores the potential of using biochar as a partial replacement for fine aggregate in concrete to help reduce the embodied carbon of Queensland's transport infrastructure. While research suggests biochar can improve some concrete properties at low replacement levels, significant challenges remain around compliance, durability, structural performance and commercial viability. The findings indicate that further research and industry development are needed before biochar can be considered a practical option for widespread use in Transport and Main Roads concrete applications.
