P49: Quantifying the Benefits of Geosynthetics for the Mechanical Stabilisation of Subgrade Soils (Year 2 – 2016/17)

November 24, 2025

A significant proportion of the Queensland road network is constructed over natural soils subject to moisture-induced strength loss and volumetric change. Traditionally, geosynthetics has been used as a subgrade treatment to bridge over soft subgrade areas to provide access for construction equipment or to improve the bearing capacity of the subgrade. Although there are manufacturer-specific design methods available to quantify the structural benefits of using geosynthetics, these design methods were not developed using locally-available material. As a result, many road agencies in Australia are reluctant to take full advantage of these benefits.
