The National Asset Centre of Excellence (NACOE) P185 report investigates the calibration of volumetric concrete mixer trucks, which batch materials by volume rather than mass. These mixers offer flexibility for remote works, specialised mixes, and small-volume projects, but current Australian Standards and MRTS70 specifications are based on mass batching, limiting their acceptance in Queensland TMR projects. The report identifies the need for clear calibration procedures to support broader use of volumetric mixers. The study reviewed Australian and international practices, particularly North American ASTM and ACI standards, and found that volumetric mixers can achieve batching accuracy comparable to traditional systems. Industry consultations confirmed that Australian practices already align closely with North American methods and that quality requirements can be met through standardised calibration, testing, and control procedures. The report ultimately recommends introducing specification clauses and minimum calibration requirements to support the wider acceptance of volumetric concrete mixer trucks in infrastructure projects.
