The Sustainability Assessment Tool for Pavements (SAT4P) is an online lifecycle assessment (LCA) tool developed through collaboration between the WARRIP and NACOE research programs for Main Roads Western Australia and Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads to quantify environmental and economic impacts of new and rehabilitated pavements, particularly those using innovative materials and technologies. Designed to overcome limitations of existing LCA tools, SAT4P supports improved material selection, design optimisation, and long-term maintenance planning by enabling users—such as agencies, consultants, and contractors—to calculate lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions and cost benefits. Its framework aligns with the Infrastructure Sustainability Council IS rating scheme, supporting sustainability reporting and project evaluation. Anticipated benefits include better understanding of alternative pavement designs, improved investment decisions, emissions and cost reductions, landfill diversion, circular economy outcomes, and industry innovation, while aligning with state policy objectives focused on reducing emissions and waste, fostering business growth, and delivering cost-effective, high-performance infrastructure.
