This project evaluated the health and environmental impacts of incorporating post-consumer recycled plastics into asphalt binders and mixes, comparing their performance with conventional bitumen and polymer-modified asphalt. Laboratory testing assessed fumes and emissions, microplastic release and leaching potential using a range of established and novel methods. Overall, recycled plastics produced results comparable to conventional materials, with all measured fumes and emissions remaining well below Safe Work Australia exposure limits despite some isolated increases. A new methodology for assessing microplastic release found recycled plastics generally performed similarly to conventional polymer-modified asphalt, while further research was recommended to refine methods for evaluating leaching potential. The findings support the safe use of recycled plastics in asphalt under laboratory conditions and provide an important evidence base for advancing circular economy outcomes and increasing the sustainable use of waste plastics in road construction.
